The Beatles - “Got To Get You Into My Life”
Soundtrack from my early youth.
There was a point at which I resented the Beatles. Not like, “That could have been me!”. I’m not that old. From the standpoint that I heard, over and over, how they were the greatest band that ever was. I never got a chance to decide that for myself. I was born in 1969. My parents were huge Beatles, Rolling Stones, Mothers of Invention, Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Eric Burden and the Animals, Bad Company, Credence Clearwater Revival, Black Oak Arkansas, etc. fans. I was raised on ROCK. So many of my friends’ parents listened to Patsy Kline, The Everly Brothers, and so on. You know, the “oldies” station in the 70s and 80s? My mom would always say, “What happened to them? They’re the same age as me. When did they get old?” So, in grade school, junior high, and high school, I always had friends whose sibling or uncle questionable neighbor had turned them on to the Beatles, and would then proceed to tell me how the Beatles were incredible, had revolutionized music, etc. This happened at least twice a year. “Dude! The Beatles are totally awesome! You have no idea!” Actually, I’ve heard.
Then when I was 24, I got a roomate who thought he had discovered the Beatles. And Jimi Hendrix. He played them EVERY FUCKING DAY, and spoke, at length, about how great the Beatles were, and how they were misunderstood in their time. No, I really don’t think they fucking were. I think they got all the attention. All of it.
So, because everyone around me kept telling me how awesome the Beatles were, I started changing the station when they came on the radio. I refused to replace my vinyl with CDs, so I rarely listened to them on my own initiative. Occasionally to seduce some girl, but not to seduce myself. I’m pretty easy, and can usually get myself in the mood without musical aid.
In the last decade or so I have found that the Beatles remind me of my early life and happy times with my parents. Now I can let go of the resentment. I have most of the collection on CD now.
I like this song. “Did I tell you I need you every single day of my life?”
