BLACK MARCH
Thursday, March 1st 2012 to Saturday 31st March 2012With the continuing campaigns for Internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites such as Megaupload under allegations of ‘piracy’ and ‘conspiracy’ the time has come to take a stand against music, film and media companies’ lobbyists.
The only way is to hit them where it truly hurts.
Their profit margins.March 2012 is the end of the 1st quarter in economic reports worldwide.
Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy, Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.
Wait the 4 weeks to buy them in April: see the film later, etc. Holding out for just 4 weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media and entertainment companies’ profits for the 1st quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments worldwide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes.
This action can give a statement of intent:”We will not tolerate the Media Industries’ lobbying for legistation which will censor the internet.”
and then I realize my anon was talking about this, not about the death marches in Soviet Russia lol
You will not, long-term, hurt the media giants. You will hurt the struggling bands whose albums release that week. You won’t hurt their pockets, because they see little of that money from direct sales
You will annihilate the record companies’ faith that they are worth supporting again. You will hurt the movie theater’s employees, who will have their shifts reduced. You will destroy independent music stores. They cannot lose even 5% of their customers for a month. You will ruin directors’ and producers’ reputations with lack of ticket sales, which will directly affect faith in their ability to helm a great production, and significantly jeopardize the next employment with them of the 100s of contractors and others they may use production after production.
You’re doing it wrong. Wikipedia’s and others’ blackouts did not cause the sponsors and cosponsors of PIPA and SOPA to withdraw support for the bills: Most of them announced by Tuesday their withdrawal due to THOUSANDS of emails, calls, and letters to their offices by constituents threatening their reelections.
Sony music corporation, Disney, BestBuy, and all the others will see your “wait til April to buy” mantra, and frankly will out-wait us. They’ll just thin operating costs (employees) to match the revenue loss.
Talk to your congressperson. Find a way to get some type of protective bill sponsored. Get hundreds of thousands of people to call, write, and email in a coordinated month.
